General ZFS Feature Recap

  • Solaris 10 9/10 syncs to Nevada b131 except dedup
  • The autoexpand property but no dynamic LUN expansion:
  • SD support not backported (CR 6241086 and 6430818)
  • Split a mirrored pool (zpool split)
  • Storage pool recovery
  • Log device removal and logbias property
  • Triple parity RAIDZ (raidz3)
  • Changes to zpool list command
  • New ZFS system process (zpool-pool-name)
  • UFS is still default root file system
  • ZFS root/boot/install uses legacy installer and lu* commands
  • OpenSolaris becomes Oracle Solaris Express 11
  • OSE 11 November release is based on b151
  • ZFS features summary in build 151 are:
  • ZFS root/boot/install and patch/update features
  • Read-only pool import (b147)
  • Pool import with missing log device (b146)
  • zpool status and zpool list improvements (b140)
  • Deduplication (b128)
  • Encryption (b149)
  • zfs send and zfs receive backup options (b148)
  • zfs diff to compare snapshot differences (b147)
  • ACL interoperability improvements (b139)

ZFS Root/Boot/Install/Update

  • ZFS is the default root file system, UFS is not an option
  • The beadm interface replaces lu* commands
  • New auto installation provides these features:
  • Mirrored root pool creation
  • Swap and dump resizing
  • LiveCD and text-mode installer do not allow mirrored root or swap and dump resizing
  • CR 6668666 is fixed: If you attach a disk to create a root pool mirror, the bootblocks are automatically applied.
  • If a spare disk is spared in, it should boot also.
  • The autoreplace property does not reformat and apply bootblocks on a replaced root pool disk.
  • ZFS Root/Boot/Install/Update – Troubleshooting
  • ZFS root/boot/install support issues:
  • No failsafe boot support.
  • Do not physically remove a root pool disk without following disk replacement steps.
  • If system doesn’t boot after a failed boot, use reset-all or boot from alternate media and then reboot.
  • Patch and update improvements:
  • The pkg image-update or pkg update commands replace the need to create separate boot environments for patching and upgrades.
  • With IPS, no need exists to update and patch BEs. We update BEs with latest build that includes bug fixes and features.
