As the volume of work increases along these lines, enterprises are increasingly looking for ways to achieve economies of scale. This is because DBAs are becoming more difficult to find, and also more expensive. Their corresponding increase in value demands that their services be focused on strategic efforts such as enterprise data planning, new database design, and so on. Yet, their time is increasingly consumed with routine but difficult and complicated activities necessary to the health of the databases, and to the IT systems they serve.
An indication of how rapidly this problem is growing is to be found in the dramatic increases in storage utilization by databases worldwide. Figure 1 illustrates how database storage has grown worldwide over the past three years.
According to Gartner, database management is a significant and mature market. It is the 3rd largest sector in Gartner’s DSNM market. Oracle 10g reduces cost of managing the Oracle database by half. By promoting the database packs, you can tap into this huge market easily.
Application Management
Included here are tools for monitoring and diagnosing problems with packaged (and custom Web) applications, for analyzing and improving the performance of applications, and for routine administration of applications, including some configuration changes.
Enterprise Manager is more than a tool for admins. It provides significant value to the entire ranks in the data center. We call this complete management life cycle. As an example, many of our Beta testers told us that their developers found EM 10g very valuable because it makes it easy to diagnose problem faster and provides channels for developers and operations staff to share information essential to root cause analysis and problem resolution.
- CIO and LOB. Primarily interested in lowering cost of IT operations through faster ROI and lower TCO.
- ISV/SI. Reduce cost of development, deployment and support of product/solution. Reduce management overhead for managing end-user.
- IT Director/Manager. Reduce reactive management; increase proactive management; access to accurate and timely information; and precision planning.
- System Administrators. Simplify management of heterogeneous Oracle environments with fewer tools.
- Database Administrators. Spend less time in reactive mode and more time on delivering strategic value.
- Developers. Improve code quality with pre and post deployment tuning and root cause analysis tools.
Oracle has created a grid computing infrastructure software that balances all types of workloads across servers, and enables all those servers to be managed as one complete system.
Grid computing can achieve the same very high level of reliability as a mainframe because all components are clustered. But unlike mainframes and large UNIX SMP servers, a grid can be built with open systems technologies such as Intel processors and the Linux operating system so it’s very low cost.
Monitor services across an array of systems and components. Roll up results to track SLAs. Drill down at each level to diagnose problems. Correlate end user performance with the performance of other systems or components in the data center plus many other features…
Capture real-time and historical performance data
Analyze and tune workload policies
Monitor virtual application resources
e.g.: J2EE containers, HTTP servers, Web caches, firewalls, routers, software components, etc.
Root cause diagnostics
Track real-time and historic performance metrics
Notifications and alerts
Administer service level agreements (SLAs)
Answer questions like:
“How much time is being spent in just the JDBC part of this application?”
“What was the average response time over the past 3, 6, and 9 months?”
Oracle DB 10g is much faster and easier to install. It reuiqres a single CD and takes less than 20 minutes to install.
It also features a silent mode that install it all in one operation. Great for embedded applications
